What do you think?

This is the first paragraph from a story I'm writing.

As I have done on many such mornings, I twitched aside the curtains and surveyed the panoramic view my seventh-floor window offered. The girl was there again, a dependable Ra who ushered in the sun. She stood outside the building at a flower stand that had been set up overnight. It was not one of the more pompous ones, with each breed and family organized into neat castes. Here the plants were flung together in promiscuous abandon, with tulips married to roses and hyacinths necking with cornflowers in the breeze. She eyed the selection as children do in candy shops, and finally laid a gloved hand on a basket of lilies. The jackal-faced clerk nodded and took her money. The girl then turned and entered a taxi, which slid like a stick of butter over a hill, settling among the glossy scarabs that were gathering outside a cemetery.

What do you think?
you obviously have no idea how to write decent literature.

with that much writing already done the cannibals should have eaten her by now!

Opinions on this poem?

Seconds old and shrieking

My blue baby

They said you couldn’t breathe

But you were warm

My blue baby

You were mine

Three years old and smiling

My blue baby

Sniffing cornflowers

They said you were all wrong

But you were all there

And my blue baby,

You were mine

Sweet sixteen and crying

My blue baby

They said you couldn’t feel

But you felt for him

And my blue baby,

You were mine

Twenty-seven and kissing

My blue baby

They said you wouldn’t last

But you were there

Dressed in white

And my blue baby,

You became his.

Opinions on this poem?
i agree with nancy - too many "blues"

other than that - i like it
Reply:I think it's very moving. But I think it would have more impact if you took out all the "blue's" until the last stanza. Make it more like a surprise to the reader. (Just my opinion!)
Reply:I understand completely where you are coming from, and where you ended up with this poem! I'll bet your daughter cried when you gave it to her at her wedding too. For that purpose it was a wonderful sentiment, for a poem to publish, it would need to be reworked, but it is beautiful as it is for why it is written. Thanks for sharing.
Reply:Its very interesting. I like it a lot.

What do you think of this poem (not mine)?

Some of you may have already read it! It's 'Litany' by Billy Collins:

You are the bread and the knife,

the crystal goblet and the wine.

You are the dew on the morning grass

and the burning wheel of the sun.

You are the white apron of the baker,

and the marsh birds suddenly in flight.

However, you are not the wind in the orchard,

the plums on the counter,

or the house of cards.

And you are certainly not the pine-scented air.

There is just no way that you are the pine-scented air.

It is possible that you are the fish under the bridge,

maybe even the pigeon on the general's head,

but you are not even close

to being the field of cornflowers at dusk.

And a quick look in the mirror will show

that you are neither the boots in the corner

nor the boat asleep in its boathouse.

It might interest you to know,

speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world,

that I am the sound of rain on the roof.

What do you think of this poem (not mine)?
It's a good example of Billy Collin's work and what has made him a popular poet, one that even non-poets know.
Reply:It is a beautiful play with images, metaphors in particular:

It is possible that you are the fish under the bridge,

maybe even the pigeon on the general's head,

but you are not even close

to being the field of cornflowers at dusk.

I'd add I'm the jigger in a blind person's toe!

It reads like a song and pleasant to the ear.

Billy had a sharp ear for that always.
Reply:i think it is funny, yet ...hm, it gives out a lot of images to play with ang i guess it can make ppl give the words a deeper thought, overall i can say i enjoyed it.

Flowers for a winter wedding.?

The bridesmaids are wearing cornflower blue.

Flowers for a winter wedding.?
with that blue, its hard to give you anything like red...since you don't like yellow, then go with just a few different shades of blue! i've seen it done and its very cool, put in the bouquets some "bouquet jewelry" and your set!
Reply:White and Yellow roses. They're cheap and iin saeson year round.
Reply:White Roses with blue ribbons on them would be pretty and would match the bridesmaid dresses. What is the overall theme of the wedding. I could tell you more.
Reply:Theknot.com has some good ideas in terms of winter bouquets and all that (I'm hoping for a winter wedding myself!):

http://www.theknot.com/ch_article.html?O...
Reply:white rses with touches of yellow.
Reply:As much as I HATE pointsettias at a wedding, you may want to incorportate some white or light yellow ones if you can find them...or at least cream.

My colors were periwinkle (or cornflower) with a hint of yellow but I was married in May...

Since they are more of a summer or spring color (to me anyway), you might be able to pull of the potted points to give it more of a Christmassy effect...they would be pretty anywhere.

Good luck and congrats!
Reply:What exactly is your question? Can you give a bit more detail?
Reply:I will prefer roses red roses

http://www.replacements.com has a wonderful site. Even if you don't know the pattern name you may still find your dishes. You click "Mikasa" and then the bar on the right side of my list. You can look at dishes, and hopefully find yours. Good luck!
